Guntur: A 10-day-old baby boy died on Wednesday at the Guntur Government General hospital on Wednesday after he was bitten by rats twice in three days.

Lakshmi, the infant’s mother, said that after her family demanded that the staff tell them about the baby’s condition, a doctor came to the ventilator and removed all the pipes and asked them to “take away the dead baby”.

The infant’s father, Ch. Naga, said that despite knowing the facts, doctors at the GGH had neglected their duties. Ms Lakshmi and Mr Naga demanded immediate stern action against the doctors, nurses and other staff involved in the treatment of their baby.

Meanwhile, GGH superintendent Dr T. Venugopala Rao admitted that the baby had been bitten by rats two days ago and added that he had directed the officials concerned to take care of the baby. He said that whether the baby was bitten again on Wednesday morning needed to be investigated.

Kothapet police station circle inspector D. Venkanna Chowday said that they were registering a case based on the complaint lodged by the parents.
