Lorry hits freedom fighter's statue in Madurai

Madurai: The statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, freedom fighter and Thevar community leader, was hit by a lorry t the traffic island here, causing flutter and tension in the area on Thursday.

However, no damage was caused to the statue, police said.

Police told PTI that the lorry capsized after colliding with the island, damaging the steps leading to the giant statue.

It was suspected that the driver lost control of the vehicle before colliding with the island. The Lorry's fuel tank damaged in the impact and the diesel started flowing on the road.

The lorry driver was taken into custody, police said.
