Chennai:A 34-year-old assistant professor at a private engineering college was murdered at her colleague’s residence in Tiruverkadu on Wednesday. Police arrested the wife of the deceased’s colleague for the murder after sustained investigations revealed that the accused, S. Shruthi allegedly strangled the woman after she learnt of the woman’s affair with her husband.
“The accused woman initially tried to play an accident drama by claiming that the deceased slipped in the bathroom and died. However, postmortem suggested that there was strangulation which raised suspicion on her,” an investigating officer said.
The deceased, S. Rajalakshmi of Mogappair works at a private engineering college in Poonamallee and was married twice before. Investigations revealed that she had separated from her husband, Suresh recently and started living with her colleague, Sambasivam (36).
“Sambasivam had reportedly told his wife Shruthi (28) that Rajalakshmi would also live with the family henceforth. That seems to have infuriated the wife,” a senior police officer said. On Wednesday, while Sambasivam went to the college, Rajalakshmi stayed back after which Shruthi picked up a quarrel with the deceased. Rajalakshmi is said to have chided Shruthi, which resulted in a verbal duel.
“Following this, Shruthi followed her to the toilet and strangled her with a Mangalasutra. She then took her to a nearby hospital in an auto rickshaw where doctors declared her brought dead. The doctors there alerted the cops as there was suspicion in the death,” the police officer said. Thiruverkadu police recovered the body and sent it to GH for a postmortem.
The accused initially persisted with her theory; police said adding that the woman gave in only after it was proved beyond doubt that the deceased struggled before dying. Tiruverkadu Police registered a case of murder and arrested Shruthi. She was remanded to judicial custody.
