Mumbai: The police now suspects Indrani Mukerjea and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna were in touch even after their break-up and considers it a possible reason for Sheena Bora’s murder. Investigators are also surprised at the way the murderers have used social media and the Internet to their advantage, keeping Sheena ‘alive’ even after her death. Indrani also used her deceased daughter’s phone to send SMSes to Sheena’s friends, including Rahul, her step-brother and boyfriend.
A police source said that they are probing to find out if Khanna and Indrani were still in touch after they separated and Sheena had caught wind of it. “All the three connected to the case were made to confront each other on Thursday. We suspect that Indrani and Khanna were still in a relationship and Sheena knew this. We feel that this could be a reason for Indrani to bump off Sheena. A crucial clue in this regard can be provided by Sheena’s brother Mikhail, who told the press he has some photos that he will hand over to police. He said the photos would reveal Indrani’s exact motive for murdering Sheena. A police team is already recording his statements. Khanna will be brought to Mumbai tonight,” an officer who is part of the investigation said.
According to the police, Indrani was providing money to her second husband after 2012, with which the unemployed Khanna started his own restaurant in Kolkata. “Khanna had a cable TV business; but from 2011 to 2012, he was unemployed. In 2012, he suddenly became a restaurant owner. He had three partners, and they started Hotel 1658 at the Dharamtala area of Kolkata. We have also gathered some clues that Indrani had gifted him a 2BHK flat and a car in 2013. In the same period, Indrani’s company account showed withdrawals in crores,” the officer said.
Crime DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “Our various teams are investigating every aspect, and soon we will get answers for every question.”
Furthermore, the cellphone records of Sheena, Khanna, Indrani and her driver Shyam Manav Manohar Rai indicate that they were together on the fateful day in April 2012.
The prime accused Indrani is said to have used Sheena’s mobile phone to send her resignation to her office. She also used the phone to send SMSes to her friends, including Rahul who was in a relationship with her.
Indrani, however, cut calls for Sheena on the phone. Sources also said she deactivated her Facebook account after deleting her last few comments. Indrani had been maintaining from the start that she had left for the US, settled there and was not returning.
The police is also probing a possible embezzlement angle where Indrani allegedly siphoned a lot of money from her media house in the name of relatives, including Sheena.
