Deepak Dev brings his friends to the stage
Deepak Dev talks about his JTPac show that will bring together his friends from the industry. His daughter will sing too
There is a gleam in his eyes and excitement in his voice as he shouts instructions to his musician-friends on the pace in which they should play or the pitch that he wants from them. Music composer Deepak Dev is very busy and animated!
Ask him what is cooking and he talks about the show, a dreamy kind, which he is putting together today at JTPac, Kochi, after nine years. Titled Deepak Dev & Friends, the show will bring together all his close friends from the Indian music industry. “This is going to be very special for me!” says the composer with a cheerful smile.
Deepak will be joined by his talented friends like the famous Shankar Mahadevan, his son Sidhardh Mahadevan, Vijay Yesudas, Karthik, Sweta Mohan, Remya Nambeesan, Afsal, Vinod Varma and Akhila Anand. “This is not just another music concert. It is all about friendship and music. Not only the singers but also the musicians are my peers and some are with me from my college days.”
The concert will have a different feel as the musicians will revisit Deepak Dev songs. “We will be having a plenty of unplugged songs in a more ‘bandish’ way than filmy style,” he explains.
According to him, the music sense and taste of Keralites has been evolving for the past few years. “This transition was what I was exactly waiting for. Our people have become more open and accepting of the global style. This gives us musicians more inspiration to jam more and bring out more. That is exactly what motivated me to do this show right now!” he goes effusive.
Seeing the way the band is shaping up, Deepak is planning to do more shows along with his friends. “Though the group was formed with this show in mind, I find a very positive future for it. It will definitely go places. As a composer, it is giving a totally different dimension for me,” he says.
That’s not all. “My daughter, Devika Deepak Dev, will make a guest appearance. She is being featured for the first time in India. Her song for Baskar The Rascal along with Swetha Mohan was received well,” he says.
