COIMBATORE: Organs of a 24-year-old man who was declared brain dead after a road accident were harvested at a city hospital on Saturday.

Vetrivel was working in Singapore. He came to Tirippur to attend a wedding on August 27. After attending the function, he was returning home in his car with his mother and sister. Unfortunately, his car was hit by a cement-loaded lorry near Avinashipalayam.

He suffered a major brain injury, while his mother and sister survived in the accident. On August 27, a team of neurosurgeons operated the youth. The next day at 8.30 am, he was declared brain dead.

The patient’s 54-year-old father, Easwaran agreed to donate his son’s organs. The family members were shown pictures and video clips to understand the entire concept of organ donation and how it helps in saving other’s lives, informed a doctor from K.G. Hospital.

The retrieval of organs started at 7.15 am at K.G. Hospital. His heart was sent to Sri Ramachandra Medical Center Chennai, each kidney to KG Hospital and PSG Hospital, liver to Gem Hospital, eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital and skin to Ganga Hospital for transplant.
