Asaduddin Owaisi slams move to rename Aurangzeb Road after Kalam
He said it would have been better to name a new road after Dr Kalam
Hyderabad: MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday criticised the change of name of Delhi’s Aurangzeb Road to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road. Speaking to newsmen at the party headquarters Darussalam here on Sunday, Mr Owaisi, the Hyderabad MP, said it was petty to pay tribute to the former President by changing the name of Aurangzeb Road. He said it would have been better to name a new road after Dr Kalam.
“If you want to pay tribute to the former President in a befitting manner, you could start something like a scholarship programme named after him to promote science education among children,” Mr Owaisi suggested.
He recalled that Union home minister Rajnath Singh had recently told Parliament that changing the names of any place or road in the national capital would be against the guidelines issued by the home ministry. He said the guidelines should be followed instead of renaming popular roads. The New Delhi Municipal Corporation had on Friday approved the change in the name of the road.
