Kochi: The KSU activists on Monday disrupted the construction activities of the Kochi Metro at Maharaja’s College ground for nearly an hour  demanding that the hostels be renovated as promised earlier in lieu of the  acquisition of nearly 16 cents of college ground.

“Former collector Sheik Pareeth had promised four years ago that a sum of Rs 8  crore will be allotted for renovation of both the ladies and the gents hostels in lieu of   acquiring the college land. However, so far nothing has been done,” said Titto Antony, KSU district secretary.

The activists took out a march to the construction site at  the college ground  at 11 a.m. and disrupted the work for nearly an hour.   The cops soon reached the spot and  district collector M.G. Rajamanickam held talks with the protesters.

“A meeting has been called tomorrow to discuss the matter in which representatives of Metro agencies will also take part.  The matter will be presented to the chief minister during a Metro review meet scheduled on September 3,” the KSU leader said.

Currently,  the hostels are in a dilapidated condition, especially the girls hostel where eight to nine students occupy  a single room.
