Visakhapatnam: Coastal erosion in Visakhapatnam, which has been a subject of discussion over the past two years, has stormed a new location on Monday: The Rushikonda beach.
The heavy tides swallowed the sand dunes in Rushikonda beach and brought down some lamp posts along the shore on Monday. Due to the rough sea, the authorities disallowed tourists from venturing to the beach.
There is deep-seated concern among Vizagites that strolls on the beach may become a distant dream in the future with the shrinking gap between the coast and the sea, which is reduced to a mere 50 metres from 250 metres due to erosion. On Monday, the erosion which largely affected the RK beach area until now, extended towards the Rushikonda beach, causing fresh concern.
An expert team from the National Institute of Ocean Technology, who studied the conditions of Vizag beaches and the reasons behind the incessant erosion, have recently submitted a report to the authorities.
