I am very surprised India took so much time to welcome stand up comedy: Sushmita Sen
The actress will be seen as a judge on the show Comedy Superstars
Mumbai: Sushmita Sen seems to be enjoying the comic relief in her career. The Bollywood actress, who is on the judges panel of Comedy Superstars, says comedy has always been her favourite genre.
“I always wanted to be a part of a process which makes people happy. I have been lucky in films as my biggest hits are all comedies. So to get a platform where I get be on your TV screens on weekends and be a part of the laughter process is brilliant,” she says.
The actress enjoys the responsibilities that come with being a judge. “It is an honour. You see these contestants from remote corners of India, having worked so hard and dreaming big. There is no system of public polling, so it is entirely up to the judges. It is a huge responsibility to ensure we are fair to the performances. It is great to see the contestants grow from strength to strength, as people and as performers. That was the high point of my experience.”
The actress finds it surprising that the concept of standup comedy took so long to catch up in India. “I am very surprised India took so much time to welcome stand up comedy. Our show matches Indian sensibilities. It is clean, language is respectable and yet it is funny. We are trying to find a balance, making it a clean and fun show, which is not offensive in any way.”
Speaking a little more about her sense of humour, Sushmita adds, “My sense of humour stems from being very open to whatever life throws my way. If something tickles my funny bone, I just express it. I don’t think what people will say. I think life is too short to worry about so many things. Even as an actor, I was never trained. I have always been spontaneous”.
