HyderabadFood Laboratory experts of AP and TS have submitted before the Hyderabad High Court that fruit sellers of both states have been rampantly using calcium carbide in ripening of all sorts of fruits.

Expressing shock at the reports of experts, a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice S.V. Bhatt of the Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday said, “It is really shocking that carbide is being used to ripen not only Mangos, fruit sellers are even using it for ripening of Grapes, Bananas, Pomegranate, Papaya, Water Melon and Oranges.”

The bench was dealing with a taken up case based on news reports in the use of carbide in ripening fruits. After perusing the experts’ reports, Justice Bhosale cited his own experience that he too was experiencing burning sensation after consuming fruits. He said, “I did not know about this till this incident came up before me. Normally, when we get a burning sensation in our stomach we feel it is because of acidity. Now it’s clear that it is because of calcium carbide.”

Citing the reports of the experts, the amicus curie in this case said consumption of fruits ripened with carbide causes cancer, breakdown of the nervous system, fatal affects on adolescent children, lung infections, burning sensation and also eyesight.

The bench also directed the FSSAI and food safety commissioners of both states file affidavits explaining the steps they are taking to ensure the availability of chemical free fruits to the people.
