ChennaiRoad, rail and truck services in the city were normal and remained unaffected by the one-day national strike called by trade unions on Wednesday. Except for a six-hour delay in the bus services towards Karnataka, all the inter-state bus services too operated as usual during the 12-hour strike.
 
Seven buses scheduled to leave for Bengaluru from 8 am to 1 pm were cancelled. Services were resumed after 1:30 pm. 
“Karnataka State Road transport (KSRTC) bus services heading to Bengaluru and other cities in the state as well as buses coming from there were cancelled,” said a KSRTC official.
 
Bus services to Andhra Pradesh and Kerala were operated as per schedule. Meanwhile, 7,000 railway employees from the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) and the All India Railwaymen Federation gathered at Moore Market Complex (MMC) near Central Railway station and held a demonstration in support of the strike.
 
“The government should withdraw the 100 per cent FDI in railways and the plan to corporatize the Integral Coach Factory (ICF),” said N. Kanniah, general secretary, All India Rail Federation.
 
All 270 vegetable trucks arrived without fail at the Koyambedu vegetable market from different parts of the country, said S. Kumar, member of Koyambedu Market Management Committee (MMC). “We made sure that passengers were not affected by the strike and ensured that no bus services were cancelled,” said a senior official at Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation.
