Chennai: VVS Laxman is the latest addition to the growing band of Virat Kohli admirers. The stylish former India batsman, now one of the members of BCCI’s special advisory panel, on Wednesday paid glowing tribute to the way Kohli led the country to a Test series win in Sri Lanka after 22 years.
In an interview to Deccan Chronicle, Laxman said the way India bounced back after losing the first Test was “fantastic.” “They are playing aggressive cricket. At one stage of the final Test it appeared that the Lankans might take the game away or the match was heading for a draw. But the boys showed tremendous determination to claim the last five wickets,” he added.
Laxman complimented Kohli’s captaincy for the turnaround. “ Virat has done a good job and I’m sure his aggression is rubbing off on others as well. It is important that a captain shows a direction to the team and remains positive. I think this series win will give him and his boys, most of whom are at the start of their careers, a lot of confidence. At the same time, I have to say there is a long way to go for this team,” he said.
According to the Hyderabadi, there would be a discussion on the role of team director Ravi Shastri shortly. “Probably we will have a meeting this month and decide something.” The spat between Ishant Sharma and Dinesh Chandimal was a jarring note in an otherwise a stellar win for India in the third Test. Laxman stressed the importance of keeping emotions under check in sports. “Only a fine line divides being aggressive and over aggressive. It’s important for cricketers to behave like role models. I have not seen the Ishant incident. But the Ishant I know is a calm cricketer. Something must have irritated him. But I’m glad he bowled the way he did,” he said.
