Finally, Calicut University stadium hosts a match
The indoor stadium is equipped with most modern facilities
KOZHIKODE: After a wait of 22 long years, the Calicut University Indoor Stadium hosted the first sports event as Thrissur Kerala Varma College took on Devagiri St Joseph’s College in a basketball exhibition match, on Thursday.
At the exhibition match, Kerala Varma College won the match 48-27 amidst cheers from the crowd. University Vice Chancellor Dr M.K Abdul Khader inaugurated the first match of the Indoor stadium which was renovated at a cost of Rs 80 lakh.
Addressing the gathering, the VC said that the University had pledged to improve the facilities for sports activities and he would do his maximum during his tenure at Calicut University.
The indoor stadium is equipped with most modern facilities. Though the Indoor Stadium was inaugurated by Education Minister P.K Abdu Rabb in December last year, since the equipment was not ready, the stadium was not able host any events.
Apart from Basketball, the Stadium can also host other major indoor games like volleyball, tennis, badminton and handball.
Meanwhile, the Synthetic track for athletics will also be available for use by December first week. The CPWD officials gave an assurance to the University during a meeting held on Thursday. The Stadium will stage the School Athletics meet hosted by Malappuram in December.
