ALAPPUZHA: After the gushing out of seawater that damaged scores of houses along the coastal belt of the district for two days, the revenue officials have begun estimating losses.

Areas like Purakad, Karoor, Valiazheekkal, Pallana and Arattupuzha were inundated with waters from the sea during the wee hours of Tuesday.

District collector N. Padmakumar sent the team to provide immediate relief after the inhabitants, mostly fisher folks, protested the way the district administration treated them after this.

Local roads, including Karoor-Purakad stretch, houses and properties and electricity posts were damaged. The waters receded on Wednesday.

“The mud and soil in the houses, accompanied with the sudden rush of waters, have now been cleared. Over 500 families are affected by the high tide,” said P. Sunil Kumar, Ambala-ppuzha tehsildar.

owever, researchers at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, claimed that flooding and high waves the southern coasts of Kerala over the past few days were caused by the combined effect of a perigean spring tide and high swell waves originating in the southern Indian Ocean.

Meanwhile, Syam Santhosh, a local youth, said the absence of a better sea wall had caused misery to their lives.

The authorities ignored the issues they raised before the district administration many a time, he said.
