Chennai: Sale of onions at various farm fresh outlets in the city has surged after the Tamil Nadu government announced it would sell onions at Rs 55 per kg.

According to the outlet managers at different venues in the city, onion sales have increased by 30-35 per cent in the last two days. “We have sold 400 kilos of onion from morning as compared to last week where the prices suddenly peaked due to a drop in supply from other states when the sales was just above 300 kg,” said T. Manivarnan, a salesman at an outlet near Anna Salai.

Most of the onions are sold during the daytime, as it is the time when the fresh stock arrives and by evening most of the arrived stocks get over, he said adding that the leftover stocks are kept in a store room at a temperature in which it does not sprout and lead to rot.

“It is a reprieve for people like us since we can now buy onions at a reduced price as compared to the regular markets where we need to buy at Rs 70-75 per kg,” said T. Vasu, a government employee who bought two kgs of onion at the Kamadhenu outlet in Tenyampet.

Sales figures were  encouraging at the outlets in Ashok Nagar and Royapettah where the past two days witnessed long queues.
