Hyderabad: The Telangana State government is planning to introduce a uniform policing system on the lines of Tamil Nadu. It has also decided to increase the monthly honorarium of ex-Army men, who took part in World War II, from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao held a meeting on Thursday with the DGP and senior police officials to discuss police reforms. Proposals are being readied to scrap the existing special police system among others. Official sources said that Mr Rao felt that there were multiple special police wings in Telangana like the special police and armed reserve police units like the SAR, CAR etc. and that there is a need to unify the policing system by bringing all wings under one umbrella.

Mr Rao was also of the opinion that there was a need to “demilitarise” the civil police.

About 100 ex-Army men met Mr Rao at his camp office in Begumpet and urged him to resolve their issues. Mr Rao hosted a lunch for them on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Mr Rao promised to extend the maximum possible assistance from the government to ex-servicemen.

Mr Rao said TS has been making rapid strides on all fronts and this year the government will spend Rs 95,000 crore on development. He expressed confidence that the next TS budget would touch Rs 1.58 lakh crore. He promised to reserve some houses for ex-servicemen built under the 2BHK housing scheme for the poor.
