Jaipur: Three people accused of raping a 19-year-old Japanese tourist in February this year were sentenced to 20 years in prison by a fast track court in Jaipur on Friday. The Japanese girl was raped in a village on the Jaipur-Ajmer National Highway.
A total of nine people were arrested during the course of investigation. Ajit Singh Choudhary and his two friends, Abrar and Abdul Wahid, were awarded 20 years imprisonment.
While Ajit was the main accused, Abrar and Abdul Wahid were sentenced under the provisions of the new CrPC provisions which treats those present during a rape like the person who committed a rape. The new provisions under Section 376D were enacted following the Delhi rape case and was used for the first time in the state.
Three others, named Shivraj, Ramraj and Ramveer, who were found guilty of conspiring to gangrape the woman, were sentenced to two years while the remaining three people were acquitted by judge Girish Ojha who completed trial in seven months. The chargesheet was filed within two weeks of the incident. The 20-year old victim had come to Jaipur as a tourist. Choudhary had introduced himself as a tour guide at Jal Mahal, one of the city’s famous tourist spots.
