ChennaiIt was 6 am when many Chennaiites were still asleep, more than 500 students from MOP Vaishnav College gathered at the Marina beach. As a part of their weeklong campaign for MOP community radio 107.8 FM they participated in a walkathon from Light house to Labour statue to stop child abuse on Saturday.

The walk was mainly conducted by the postgraduate students of School of Communication and Media Studies. The objective of the walk was to spread awareness among children on child abuse in Mylapore. This walk was a part of ‘Voices –hear and be heard’, a public relations campaign for social change.

Dr Susan Sridhar, head of the department of media management, said that the students came up with this idea for their 107.8 FM. Earlier this week they had conducted similar such social awareness campaign on topics like women’s legal rights, stress management and environmental issues in Nungambakam, Saidapet and Kotturpuram.

Shruthi Parasuram, a student and coordinator of the walk, said. “We wanted to choose a topic which people fear to talk about. So by this community radio programme we would like to make parents aware of this growing problem.” Film director Kirthiga Udyanidhi, present on the occasion, said it was encouraging to find youngsters take up such issues.
