HyderabadIn the last week of June, the Bangladesh police scored Asia’s biggest drug bust by seizing a ship filled with liquid cocaine worth Rs 93 crore at a Bangladeshi port. The destination of the drug, which was being smuggled by infamous drug cartels from South America, was suspected to be India. The bust indicated that cartels like Sinaloa and Pacific had started directly targeting India.

Powerful Latin American drug cartels have spread their tentacles to metros like Hyderabad, Narcotic Control Bureau officials suspect. Several drug mules have reached the country, hiding drugs in body cavities or using other methods.

Just three days after Narcotic Control Bureau officials caught a South African woman at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad with cocaine pallets in her stomach, Mumbai Airport officials caught a Brazilian woman while she was smuggling drugs in a similar manner. The Narcotic Control Bureau officials also found she had successfully walked past the security twice in previous months.

According to Narcotic Control Bureau officials, using amateur smugglers is a usual modus operandi. Mosiea Moosa, who was caught in Hyderabad, was a pizza maker in a fast food restaurant. “She did not seem experienced in smuggling. She was earning very little from her job, which attracted her to smuggling,” said a Narcotic Control Bureau official, who questioned Moosa.
