Guntur: No infant has been admitted to the ICU of the Guntur Government Hospital for the past three days, said to be a record of sorts in recent years. This comes days after an infant died following rat bites at the ICU. While government and hospital authorities cleaned up the hospital on a war-footing. The rat bite incident has reportedly scared off people.

A senior officer at the GGH said health minister Dr K. Srinivas had announced the suspension of two nurses and transfer of two doctors following the rat bite incident, but orders have not been issued. The police has not filed a chargesheet though the autopsy and forensic reports of the baby have been received.

That incident apart, 913 infants died while undergoing treatment at the GGH this year, till August. These were among 2189 infants suffering from various ailments who were admitted in the hospital. In all, about 6,000 patients including youth, children and infants , have died at the hospital.

Mr N. Yedukondalu said staff negligence, doctors’ reluctance to attend to patients, particularly infants, and poor amenities were turning people away.
