Thiruvananthapuram: Congress Working Committee (CWC) member A. K. Antony has said that the CPM is paying the price for fanning communal sentiments to win the 1987 Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Antony said the CPM sowed the wind, but the BJP is now reaping the whirlwind. However, the growth of BJP in the state is a temporary phenomenon. Antony said the CPM is a party which tried to incite religious sentiments among the people in a bid to defeat the Congress.

Antony also felt the political climate in the state favours the UDF in both the civic and assembly elections. The people would vote for continuation of the government to ensure good governance.

“The situation in the state is in favour of the Congress. There is nothing to be worried regarding group fighting. The present issues could be resolved by the KPCC,” Mr Antony said. Party activists should not show intolerance; they should also stay away from controversies.

Reacting to the tableau portraying Sree Narayana Guru in a cross at a procession organised on Sree Krishna Jayanthi, he said it was painful to see the way the CPM “insulted” the renaissance leader. The CPM’s act was a sign of intolerance, Mr Antony said.
