Hyderabad: Robbers attacked six passengers travelling in the Visakha-Nanded Express on Thursday and decamped with 159 grams of gold jewellery.  There was no escort in the train at that time.

The Train 18509 Visakhapatnam-Nanded Express left the port  city at about 7.30 pm. Around 3 am, after the train crossed Bonakal in  Khammam, the alarm chain was pulled from the pantry coach.  The train stopped at Chintakani, nearly 15 km before Khammam.

“A gang member must have been on the train. As per their plan, when  the train reached the spot, he pulled the chain and others who were waiting there pulled gold chains from women passengers who were sleeping near the windows and fled,” said Secunderabad Government Railway Police inspector A. Anjaneyulu.

Six women in  S4, S7, S8 and S9 bogies were relieved of their gold ornaments. A senior official said that escorts are provided to trains that are  vulnerable to attacks. This train was not in that list.
