Ace lyricist Vairamuthu’s literary work Kallikaattu Ithikasam, which won him the Sahitya Akademi award for the ‘Best Literary Work’ in 2003, will soon be translated into 23 languages.
The Sahitya Akademi has decided to bring national recognition to this work by translating it in languages like English, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada and Assamese. Kallikaattu... portrays the agonising tale of a poor farmer who belongs to the riverbed region of the Theni belt.
The novel captures the beliefs and sentiments of the rural community who confront nature, as though in a battle. About one lakh copies of the novel have been sold in Tamil. A source close to the lyricist says, “This initiative will act as a stepping stone to be a cultural bridge between Tamil and other languages. The translation work will begin soon and there will be functions to release these books in each states’ capital.”
