KOLLAM: Maoist Anoop Mathew George was on Friday remanded in police custody for five days by the Additional Sessions Court in connection with the inquiry into a case in which two Kollam residents procured SIM cards for aiding the Maoists.

Anoop  is the fourth accused in the alleged case of SIM card procurement for conducting “anti-national” activities. Anoop, who was in Coimbatore central jail,   was brought to Kollam.

He raised slogans like  ‘Maoism is not terrorism.’   Maoist Roopesh is the third accused in the case and was taken into custody in July.

The local police had earlier arrested two suspected Maoists, Remanan, 44,  from Sasthamkotta and Anandan, 50,  from Kundara for allegedly procuring SIM cards by forging documents.

The  SIM cards were  purchased from a mobile shop in Bharanikkavu. Roopesh allegedly contacted a weapon dealer in Coimbatore using one of those SIM cards procured by Remanan, and the call details were finally traced leading to  the arrest of the duo.

Roopesh had also staged a hunger strike in police custody for treating Maoists as terrorists and anti-nationals instead of as political prisoners.
