Hyderabad: The Telangana State government owes Rs 40 crore arrears of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to farmers and agricultural workers in rural areas.

The scheme is supposed to provide employment in rural areas during drought and national calamities. As per norms, payments have to be made within 15 days but arrears have mounted for nearly a year.

The scheme promises 100 days of employment every year to each rural household. This is to check migration of farmers and agricultural labourers to urban areas.

However, the ground reality is different in TS. While the scheme promises 100 days of employment per year, in Telangana it was brought down to just 31 days this year. Last year, it had provided just 42 days’ work.
