Chennai: Two B tech students arrested after sexually assaulting 21-year-old women

A 40-year-old electrician was on Saturday arrested in connection with the murder of an AIADMK functionary Kottaisamy at Red Hills last Sunday.
ChennaiTwo engineering students were arrested by the Kancheepuram police for allegedly sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in a lift in their apartment complex in Potheri near Vandalur on Friday.
 
Other residents nabbed the students after the victim pushed her tormentors and rushed out of the lift screaming. The Maraimalai Nagar police arrested the two identified as Sarat Kumar, 21 and Chandan Kumar, 20, B Tech students of private engineering college in Vandalur. The woman, a native of Madhya Pradesh, is an art student doing a part time job. She was going to the fifth floor apartment when the incident happened.
 
After seeing the two inside the lift she hesitated getting in. One of the suspects allegedly pulled her inside and when the lift started moving up they started sexually assaulting her, sources said. 
 
On the fifth floor when she got out screaming other residents came running. Seeing this, the engineering students got back into the lift and went down. But as soon as they reached ground floor other residents overpowered them and later handed them over to Maraimalai Nagar, the police said.  
 
The two were booked under the Section 4 (1) of Tamil Nadu (Prevention) of Women Harassment Act and 294 (b) (abusing) of IPC. The students were remanded to judicial custody after producing them before a magistrate court in Chengalpet. 
 
The police added that the duo had never misbehaved with anybody in the apartment complex earlier but on Friday they were under the influence of alcohol. The victim was staying in the rented flat for the past few months, while the students have been staying in the same complex for the past two years.
