Odisha: Mother sells kidney for daughter’s marriage
Gang luring poor people to sell their kidneys
BHUBANESWAR: A woman in Odisha’s Bhawanipatna, about 500 km from here, has sold her kidney to raise money for her daughter’s marriage, according to reports here on Saturday.
Daily wage worker Raju Bengali, a resident of Bahadhur Bagicha Pada in Bhawanipatna town, could not arrange money for his daughter’s marriage and sold his wife’s kidney. The couple was reportedly paid Rs 3 lakh by a middleman.
There is a kidney racket operating in the area, and two more persons have also sold their kidneys to the middleman.
Extreme poverty in Kalahandi district is being exploited by a gang that is luring poor people to sell their kidneys.
According to sources, the middleman has high connections and he is related to a politician in the area. He is said to be running the racket with the help of two youths from the neighbouring Medinipore area.
A local newspaper alleged that the middleman was running the racket with aides in top hospitals in Cuttack and Visakhapatnam.
