Hyderabad:  State universities are likely to get Vice-Chancellors sooner than Chancellors. Government sources said search panels are being formed to identify names as per the new rule.

The government has got just two months left of the three months that the high court gave it to appoint Vice-Chancellors.

On Friday, the government modified the existing universities legislation to empower itself to make these appointments, that were earlier done through the Governor.

Search committees would suggest a panel of three names for each university, out of which one will be selected by the government.  Telangana Universities Act may be brought in later, an Osmania University dean said.

Chancellors could be appointed later. Currently, the eligibility criteria for Chancellors are unclear and the norms for this would also have to be  introduced in the universities laws.
