Despite winning a National Award this time, Kutram Kadithal, directed by Bramma, hasn’t released yet. In fact, it was the only Tamil film to be featured in the Indian Panorama last year. Speaking to DC about its delay, Bramma says that the film was supposed to have released in May but didn’t. Ask him why and he says that back then there had been a lot of big movies waiting for their releases, leaving us with no option but to wait. “Kaaka Muttai released in June. Two critically acclaimed movies getting released in the same month is not a wise option. So the team had to wait further. But it will definitely hit screens by September 24,” Bramma tells us.
“After the movie toured to most of the film festivals, people will watch it with a lot of expectation. I will have to deliver better in my next film,” adds Bramma, who’s also a theatre professional. Kuttram Kadithal was targeting the common audience here but it just happened that before getting to the theatres, it went to a lot of international film festivals and got a lot of recognition,” he smiles.
Speaking about the film, which is a social thriller, Bramma says, “Kuttram Kadithal is actually the 44th chapter in Tirukkural. The relevance to the movie is more on the lines of punishment for the crime and the audience will understand its significance when they watch it. The movie revolves around the lives of three friends. It has people from different walks of life. One particular incident changes their whole life. How the social identity of an individual influences his/her reaction to a situation forms the essence of the story,” he adds.
Bramma says every film has the urge to communicate to the masses. “I don’t want this movie to be categorised as either ‘art’ or ‘commercial’. You can’t ignore Kutram Kadithal as a film festival product. It has a message that everyone needs to know and I think that will help it to become commercially successful as well,” signs off Bramma.
