ChennaiIn a bizarre burglary attempt, an unidentified man broke into four houses in a residential complex in Mandaveli lane in Mylapore on Monday afternoon but decamped with valuables from only one of the houses. A few sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 3,000 in cash were stolen from a portion on the ground floor while the valuables in the other houses were intact, according to a resident.

The incident happened around noon at Bethel Illam, which houses four portions - two each on the ground and first floors. All the occupants were away at work when the burglar broke in.

"I learnt about the break in around 12.20 pm and rushed to my house to find all the valuables strewn on the floor and on the bed. It seems that he came looking for a specific item and did not bother about the valuables," said N.P. Anand Kumar (48) who works as an administrative staff in Billroth hospitals.

Anand Kumar lives on the first floor of the house and said that no valuables were stolen from his house. "Only the ground floor house was burgled. The burglar had taken water bottle from the refrigerator of one house and kept it in another. It seems bizarre," Anand Kumar said.

An elderly lady resident had come out on hearing noise and even questioned the suspect, who was wearing a headscarf but was not covering his face. "The suspect told the old woman that he had come to 'service electrical appliances' and questioned her interest in him in a rude tone. Taken aback, the lady informed her son who found the houses broken into," Anand Kumar said, recalling the sequence of events.

Police said that the burglar had used a crowbar to break open the latch in all the four houses. "It is still not clear why he burgled only one house although he broke into all the four," a police officer said.  No CCTV cameras have been installed in the residential complex.

"There is a grab from a CCTV camera at the end of the street which shows the suspect leaving in a two wheeler with another person. But, the face was not clear," the senior police officer added. The Mylapore police have registered a case and are investigating.
