Khammam: An alert doctor in AP helped Telangana police recover a four-day-old baby within hours after he had been stolen from the government area hospital in Khammam on Tuesday. The baby was recovered at Nellipaka in AP.
Police said the baby was born on September 12 to Paja Ramprasad and his wife Radha of Tegada in Charla mandal, at the area hospital here. The baby developed jaundice and doctors advised that he be kept in an incubator. Nurses shifted the baby to the incubator on Sunday, and called the mother periodically to feed the baby.
On Tuesday, when Radha was not called, the family began asking the staff about the baby. The nurses were unable to give a clear answer. Following this, they called up their relatives who, after an argument, allegedly beat up some hospital staff.
Police rushed to the spot and asked the couple to file a complaint. During interrogation, hospital nurses said that they had called for Radha to feed the child. “A woman, who looked like Radha, took the baby and we thought she was Radha,” a nurse stated. Police immediately launched a search.
Meanwhile, additional district medical and health officer Pullaiah received a call from Nellipaka primary health centre in AP stating that a woman had brought a child for treatment.
“She claimed that she gave birth to the child,” the Nellipaka PHC doctor told Mr Pullaiah. The information was passed on to Bhadrachalam police who sent team to Nellipaka and arrested Karam Kalpana and her mother Ramulamma who had the baby.
