Bengaluru: The Congress government in Karnataka refused to follow Rajasthan and Maharashtra in banning the sale of meat during Hindu festivals and revoked an earlier order banning the sale of meat on Ganesha Chaturthi on Thursday.

Though the social networking media went abuzz with the news that the BBMP had prohibited the sale of meat for the Hindu festival, Food & Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundurao tweeted later in the day to say that the state would not impose the ban.

On Tuesday, BBMP said, in line with a general circular that is issued on every important Hindu festival, every year, that the sale of meat would be prohibited on Thursday. Within hours, the IT City’s decision drew widespread criticism on social networking sites.

But the Congress government was quick to douse the fire. Mr Gundurao told Deccan Chronicle, “There was some confusion due to the earlier circular issued by the previous BJP government on imposing ban on sale of meat. The government will take necessary action to revoke the circular. I would like to clarify that there will be no ban on slaughtering and sale of meat on Thursday.”
