Bengaluru: Three intoxicated men assaulted a police constable on Wednesday night near the Benniganahalli flyover in Rammurthy, after being told not to consume alcohol in a public place.

Pundelekka, (25), a police constable attached to the Rammurthy Nagar police station, sustained injuries to his chin and head and was rushed to Hosmat Hospital. He is now recuperating. According to the police, the incident occurred at around 8 pm in a park on Wednesday.

Pundelekka has been deputed at the Rammurthy Nagar police station for the last two years. On the day the incident took place, he was heading  home on Cheetah after finishing his duty in the OMBR Layout in Kasturi Nagar. When he dropped in at a tea stall near the Benniganahalli flyover, a local informed him about some anti-social elements creating a ruckus in a park nearby.

When he entered the park, he saw three men drinking alcohol and  creating a nuisance. The police constable ordered the trio to leave immediately as it was a public place. The three drunk men charged at the cop, asking him to back off, and this led to an argument.

Enraged, the miscreants turned violent and began attacking the cop with liquor bottles and stones, leaving him injured.

The incident came to light after a few passers-by stopped when they heard  the commotion and rushed to Pundelekka’s aid. The miscreants fled the spot. The injured cop was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and an alert was sent  to the police station.

The Rammurthynagar police have registered a case under section 332 of the IPC (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty) and have launched a massive manhunt to nab the three accused.
