Jayasurya is known for keeping himself abreast of the latest fashion trends and a big part of that style sense can be credited to his fashion designer wife Saritha who runs her own boutique Dejavu. She had silently been working behind the scenes at detailing Jayasurya’s costumes in his hit film Punyalan Agarbathis directed by Ranjith Sankar but has now got her chance at designing the costumes for two pretty actresses.
Saritha has been appointed the official costume designer for Jayasurya’s home production Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekham. Speaking about how she got roped in, Saritha explains, “It was natural that I design Jayan’s costumes for Su Su… During discussions with the film’s director Ranjith, he mooted the idea of me trying my hand at designing heroine Sshivada’s outfits. I took up the offer and out of the blue, after seeing my work for Sshivada, Ranjith asked me to design the looks for the other heroine Swathi too.” Sshivada plays a Bengaluru-based speech therapist who comes to Palakkad and Swathi plays a Mumbai girl who likes traditional outfits. This gave Saritha two extreme costume variations to work on and she has designed each and every outfit herself.
Designing for her boutique and designing for films are as different as chalk and cheese, she says. “In films I am not there to showcase my prowess as a fashion designer. Rather, I have to know what the character and script demand and fashion the outfit accordingly. Mood creation through outfits is very important. For example, in a sad scene, I cannot bring in an outfit that is very vibrant where as I can afford to bring in vibrancy in a song sequence. I kept on checking with Ranjith about the moods and the liberties I could take with respect to the costumes and I guess he is happy with the final result.” Of course, since it was a home production she felt completely at ease and was present for the entire shoot of the film.
Asked if she would like to work as a costume designer in more films, Saritha quips, “Ranjith did inquire if I could work for his next movie to which Jayan inquired if he was considering him as the hero. I have not thought on those lines and am happy with my boutique work.”
