Kolkata: Within hours of her government declassifying 64 secret files running into 12,744 pages on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee put pressure on the Narendra Modi government on Friday and demanded that the Centre make public other hidden files on him lying in its possession.

Some files indicate that a few of Netaji’s family members were spied on in Independent India, but there is no clarity on whether Bose had died in an aircrash in Taiwan in 1945 as is widely believed.

Ms Banerjee’s call comes when the NDA government has developed cold feet on releasing the confidential files on the iconic freedom fighter. Of 64 decoded files, 55 belong to the Kolkata police special branch while nine others are from the West Bengal police intelligence branch.

The original ones have been put on display at the Kolkata Police Museum, in the office of deputy commissioner of police (north division), at 113 APC Road in Manicktala. An event, attended by some members of the Bose family and media, was held on Friday to mark the files’ declassification.
