New Delhi: Home boy Somdev Devvarman played out of his skin to help India end the day with scores level against top seeds the Czech Republic on Day One of the Davis Cup World Group play-offs here on Friday.
 
In a show of grit and determination, Somdev stunned World No.40 Jiri Vesely 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-3 in a battle lasting almost three hours after Yuki Bhambri had gone down fighting to Lukas Rosol 2-6, 1-6, 5-7 in the opening rubber of the tournament.
 
Somdev, who has not lost a match at the DLTA courts since the Commonwealth Games, kept his winning record flying high. The hosts, who are fielding a strong doubles pair in Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna, give India a better chance to take the lead on Saturday.
