Chennai: IIT-Madras has come up with a technology to recycle water in washing machine and reuse it, thereby minimising the use of water consumed for washing clothes. IIT-M director Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi on Saturday said that washing machine operation consist of three cycles, in which water could be recycled in two of the cycles and for the third one it requires fresh water. “We have developed the technology in which the water will be recycled and reused in washing machines.
We developed the system in the last one year involving faculty from civil and electrical engineering departments. Four months ago we filed for patents and now we are talking to some companies for commercialising the technology,” he said. Speaking about the innovation in powering homes with 48V uninterrupted DC power, Prof. Ramamurthi said that after making success in trials at Madurantakam (Tamil Nadu), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) their innovation is now put to big trial in Sasaram (Bihar) to power one lakh homes and provide electricity in 5,000 homes in Lakhimpur (Assam).
