Vitamin D link to lower muscle mass
Scientists reported that almost all the adults with lower skeletal muscle mass were found to be Vitamin D deficient
Hyderabad: A study of young adults in Hyderabad has shown that Vitamin D deficiency has a correlation with lower muscle mass. However, scientists say Vitamin D deficient persons may not necessarily be weak.
A study of young adults aged between 18 and 20 in Hyderabad was conducted as part of the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents Study.
The study was led by deputy director of National Institute of Nutrition Dr Bharati Kulkarni along with scientists from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine University of Bristol.
Nearly 1000 young adults, including 42 per cent women, were studied for association between the appendicular skeletal muscle mass, grip strength and Vitamin D deficiency.
Researchers said that about 33.6 per cent of the studied men had Vitamin D deficiency while 51.4 per cent women were deficient. Scientists reported that almost all the adults with lower skeletal muscle mass were found to be Vitamin D deficient.
As per guidelines, adults in the age group of 19 to 50 years should have an daily intake of 5 micrograms.
