Bengaluru: Two back-to-back Grand Slam doubles titles and sitting atop the world rankings, Sania Mirza could have hardly asked for more this season. But despite all the accolades that has come her way this season, the shining beacon of Indian women’s tennis is still hungry for more and is already looking forward to the next challenge.
“This year I had two targets. One was to get to number one and the other was to win a Slam and I did both. I think I surpassed my dream for this year,” said the top doubles player on a promotional visit to the city.
“I am number one in the world so I am playing my best tennis. I think I have been playing well for a long time and have been fortunate enough to have a 11-12 year long career and (am) still going. There is a lot of good things happening. So it’s been a great year,” said Sania, who flew down to her home in Hyderabad a day after winning the US Open doubles title with Swiss Martina Hingis in time for her sister Anam’s engagement.
“Next year is the Olympic year and even more important than that I think would be great to keep winning Slams,” she added. Asked about the future of women’s tennis, she revealed that there is no dearth of talent in the country.
“I was fortunate to have a good singles career but it is unfortunate that in that eight years (when I played singles) we didn’t really have someone who came out and made that big explosion like I did,” she opined adding that her husband and cricketer Shoaib Malik remains a pillar of support and inspiration.
