Limited number of IP addresses with the IPv4 has been a major concern
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In view of the increasing requirement of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses owing to the rising internet usage, the state government has initiated steps to upgrade its IT infrastructure from IP version-4 (IPv4) to IPv6.

According to a statement from Kerala State IT Mission, the upgrading of IPv4 to IPv6 will make available almost an infinite pool of IP addresses. The IT Mission has invited tenders for implementation of IPv6.

In the initial phase, IPv6 migration would be done at the two state Data Centres, e-governance applications, portals, website services hosted by state data centres, Kerala State Wide Area Network up to the block headquarters level. The remaining IT infrastructure in the state would be covered in the second phase.

The limited number of IP addresses with the IPv4 has been a major concern all over the world. In India, only 18.5 million IPv4 addresses are available for a population of 1.2 billion.

IP address is used to identify a device in a computer network. With the migration to IPv6, the state's IT infrastructure will be complying with international standards. It would also ensure faster delivery of online services.
