ALAPPUZHA: A conclave of 138 Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam functionaries held in Cherthala here on Sunday gave its nod for a political party, but a final decision was left to its supreme council.

It endorsed the idea of a broad-based majority community outfit proposed by its general secretary Vellappally Natesan. In a secret ballot, only four leaders rejected the idea.

A final decision will come before the Assembly elections in the middle of next year.

“Prior to this, from November 15, for the protection of majority community, Yogam will take out a Rath Yatra (chariot campaign) from Kasargod. It will end on November 30 in Thiruvananthapuram with a show of strength,” Natesan told reporters after the conclave.

“The new outfit will seek a strategic tie-up with all sections of the majority community right from Naayadi to Namboodiri. For this, the Yogam will cooperate with all kinds of legitimate organisations in the state.”

Mr Natesan and his son Thushar Vellapally, vice-president of the Yogam and chairman of its youth wing, had made similar announcements in July 2012 and February 2013.

Meanwhile, political analyst K. Venu, a former Naxalite, said a situation had developed in favour of the Yogam to test their political fortunes as there was a perception of exodus of backwards and Dalits from CPM to BJP.

“The presence of a Yogam-backed political party could act as a deterrent to direct migration of (CPM) cadres to Hindutva parties,” he said.

However, the question remains whether the latest announcement would suffer the same fate as earlier. History tells such outfits had no impact on Kerala’s political domain.
