5 farmers commit suicide in Telangana

Hyderabad: Crop failures and debts, coupled with the toddy ban, continues to take a toll on the rural population of Telangana. On Monday, five farmers committed suicide due to crop failure and debt burdens in Telangana.
Three of them were from Mahabubnagar and one each from Medak and Adilabad districts. Ch Satyanarayana (45) from Medak district committed suicide in the early hours of Monday by hanging himself at his home. In addition to the two acre of land he owned, he had leased another 10 acres, in which he had dug four borewells. However, the borewells failed and to compensate for the loss, he took a loan of Rs 70,000 from a bank. He also had Rs 4 lakh of debts in the village and depressed over crop failure.
Rathod Devu from Adilabad committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Monday. Devu had sowed cotton on five acre of land, but the recent heavy rains had ruined the crop. Depressed with this, Devu committed suicide. S. Chinnaiah from Balmoor, Sudhakar from Manavapadu and S. Masaiah from Tala kondapalli of Mahabu-bnagar district committed suicide on Monday. They too were depressed over alleged debts and crop failure.
