THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time ever, the renovated Tagore Theatre would host the 20th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), which is slated to be held in the first week of December.

Kerala Chalachithra Academy has already placed a request to get permission from the Information Public Relations Department (I&PRD) to hire the renovated Tagore Theatre as one of the main venues to host IFFK –one of the most-anticipated film festivals held in South India.

Noted Film Director Shaji N Karun, who is in charge of conducting IFFK, told DC that Tagore Theatre would be one of the venues hosting IFFK.

“We have placed a request before the authorities and are hopeful of cooperation from PRD. An expert team has scrutinised the facility and submitted a report before Kerala Chalachithra Academy. The sound system is not compatible for film screening and we would have to set up a dolby system for screening movies at the Theatre,” said Shaji N. Karun.

But, hiring the renovated Tagore theatre for hosting cultural events is going to cost to be expensive for artists. The authorities have jacked up the rates for hiring the Theatre, which was renovated spending a whopping Rs 23 crores.

As per the proposed rates, renting out Tagore theatre for half a day would cost Rs 40000 while for the full day, the authorities are planning to charge 1 lakh. Before renovation, Tagore theatre used to charge Rs 8000 for half a day.
