It has been around 17 years since Mohanlal-starrer Olympiyan Anthony Adam was released. But no one might have forgotten the kid who left the audience awed with his brilliant roller skating performance. Arun Kumar, who started as a child artist, is back in action after a brief hiatus with Vipin Das-directed Muthugavu.

Arun says the gap occurred because of lack of good offers. “I cannot say that I have become selective, but the offers that came to me were not up to the mark. Even in such a situation, I have acted in a few films which were not notable roles and some movies did not come out well,” says the actor.

For Arun, Muthugavu is a close-to-heart subject as he was there with writer-director Vipin Das from the pre-production stage itself. “Vipin chettan is my cousin. So from a younger age itself, as both of us were fond of films, we used to discuss about movies.”

“It was following these discussions he cast me in his short film Portrait. It was a monologue which depicted the life of a struggling artiste. Again I acted in his another short film — Aju Varghese-starrer Unnimoolam,” says the actor.

It was during the production of Unnimoolam, Vipin shared the story idea of Muthugavu with Arun. “I guess, it was then in a ‘skeleton’ stage. It was after completing Unnimoolam, he stepped into the pre-production of that subject. Naturally, I got the chance to sit with him throughout the scripting and I was like his assistant in those days. So the movie is very close to my heart,” he says.

Muthugavu has Suresh Gopi’s son Gokul in the lead. Arun is essaying the role of Gokul’s close friend Tony — a coincidence, as his debut in Olympian also was in the same name. “He is a college student, but in the film, there’s no much importance to college. The focus is on his personal life,” Arun sums up.
