Farmer distress leads to 7 suicides
Due to lack of rains, the crop failed

Hyderabad: As many as seven farmers across different parts of Telangana allegedly committed suicide on Thursday, depressed over crop failure and burden of debts.
Three from Medak, two from Mahabubnagar and one each from Karimnagar and Warangal districts committed suicide.
C.H. Sivaiah, 54, from Shapur village of Raikode mandal in Medak district committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his field.
Sivaiah owned five acres of land in which he cultivated cotton for the past two years. In addition to this, he took another six acres of land on lease.
He borrowed Rs 5 lakh and invested it on the crop. Due to lack of rains, the crop failed. Depressed Sivaiah committed suicide.
Malgonda Raju, 34, from the same village succumbed while undergoing treatment at Gandhi hospital at Secunderabad. Raju was cultivating cotton in the three acres of land he had. He borrowed Rs 2 lakh for the crop. Depressed with the crop failure, he consumed pesticide on September 19. He was undergoing treatment at Gandhi hospital, where he succumbed on Thursday.
V. Srinivas Reddy, 45, from Ramayampet sold off one acre of land from the two acres he had for the wedding expenses of his only daughter Sindhuja.
He cultivated cotton in the one acre land. As the crop failed, he started driving an auto rickshaw.
In the beginning of the crop season, he borrowed nearly Rs 3 lakh from banks, self help groups and villagers and dug two bore wells in the field, which failed. He committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Thursday night.
Ch Idanna, 35, from Valluru village in Itikyal mandal and Ramulu, 45, from Koukuntla village in Devarakadra mandal of Mahabubnagar district committed suicide. While Ramulu immolated himself by pouring kerosene, Idanna hanged himself.
In Nalgonda, P. Narasimhachary, 47 of Jaikesaram village in Choutuppal mandal committed suicide by jumping into an agricultural well. He cultivated cotton in his one and-a-half acre land.
He also leased another four acres and cultivated cotton, but the crop failed due to lack of rains and he was depressed with the increasing financial burdens. He had debts up to Rs 3 lakh. In Karimnagar, Gurrala Ravinder Reddy, 45 from Gollapalli village in Yellareddypet mandal, collapsed in his field and died on Thursday.
