Kochi: The row over denial of admission to 17 students to UG courses at autonomous Maharaja’s College by the college authorities citing that they have crossed the prescribed age limit for admission to the course is set to take a new turn with the aggrieved students deciding to take the legal course.

The students are set to file a petition in the Ker-ala High Court on Monday against what they call denial of justice to them.

The students include SC/ST, OBC and general candidates. In the first move, five candidates belonging SC/ST and OBC were denied admission by the authorities saying that they have crossed the prescribed age limit of 22 even after they were given allotment. These students were N R Sethukrishnan, V S Sanil, V U Swathi Sangeeth, M K Kirandas and Jobin P Jose.

“As the five students made it a big issue with the support of the action council of various Dalit outfits, the college authorities ejected 12 other students belonging to other categories saying that they too crossed the age limit of 22. At the time of first allotment there was no prospectus available for Maharaja’s College and after the allotment the college authorities made one prescribing the age limit. The MG University Regional Centre authorities also told us there was no prescribed age limit for UG admission,” said Sethukrishnan, one of the affected students.

Sethukrishnan said that the Governing Council of Maharaja’s Unive-rsity can resolve the row by taking a decision in favour of the affected students.

“Now they are asking us to approach the court and get a favourable decision from it so that they can act on the basis of it. They are landing us in real trouble for no fault of us,” said Sethukrishnan.
