Chennai: Soon, passengers waiting to board a train at Chennai central and Egmore platforms can order food from their favourite outlets and have it delivered to them.
The ‘station-based’ e-catering service will be introduced in 45 stations across the country to allow passengers waiting at stations to order food of their choice from leading caterers to be delivered at selected stations.
IRCTC will soon float Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to ensure participation food chains such as KFC, McDonald, Haldiram, Bikanerwala, Nirualas, Sagar Ratna, Wangs Kitchen, Sarvana Bhavan, Subway, Domino’s, KFC, Pizza Hut and Kelloggs, Suresh Chandra, said manager, IRCTC, Southern Railways. “We are in final phase of talks with eateries and are expecting new vendors to be in the stations in the coming month,” added Suresh Chandra. “We are also planning to introduce a system, where one can book food in prior and once you detrain, you can pick it so that one need not waste much time ordering,” he said.
A minimum of five brands per station will be empanelled by IRCTC to ensure availability of a wide variety at the stations. “It will be useful as we can order food of our choice from our favorite restaurants,” said T. Kautsalya, a passenger. IRCTC will implement the scheme in a phased manner. The facility will be extended to more stations depending on the response received.
