Muslims thronged the Bagalkot market on the eve of Bakrid to buy sheep and goats

Hubballi: Two goats with crescent shaped indentations on their forehead sold for a whopping Rs 3.5 lakh and in the process not only made the new owners happy, but also managed to wipe away the debt of their earlier owner, Tholu Nayak.

A 42-year-old farm labourer hailing from Devur village of Indi taluk in Bijapur, Tholu Nayak has managed to settle his entire agricultural loan.

Suffering heavy crop losses owing to drought in the region, Nayak was banking on the goats to extricate him from his predicament.

He waited for two years before selling them and it was well worth the wait.

One of the goats sold for Rs 2 lakh and the other for Rs 1.5 lakh in Bagalkot market, allowing him to get rid of acute poverty.  These goats with crescent marks are sought-after during festival as Muslims consider it auspicious and would bring prosperity if they sacrificed such goats. The farm labourer had refused to sell the animals at various markets in Karnataka and neighboring States as he was confident that the goats could be sold for lakhs of rupees during the festival. Taking advantage of the heavy rush at the markets, he waited for the highest bidder. This approach paid off handsomely. “I work as farm labourer as I have only two acres of land. I incurred losses due to crop failure this year. Now, the goats have proved lucky for me and resolved all my financial problems and I can settle loans taken for sowing,” Tholu Nayak said.
