She’s transformed from a punk rocker to a glam chic. The large crowd that gathered at a popular mall in Malleswaram on Friday evening, were clearly there to catch a glimpse of their favourite star, Shruti Haasan. In Bengaluru to launch a fashion brand, the pretty actor and singer interacted with some of her fans. “I have a lot of friends in Bengaluru and I love its vibrancy. It also has so many cool places to dine at,” she says of her love for the city.   We ask if entering the film world was natural progression for the 5’8” tall daughter of Kamal Haasan and Sarika and she admits, “When I was young, I wanted to do this, but then in between it faded away, as I discovered music.”

Also, I wasn’t confident about how I looked, as I was surrounded by all the beautiful women in the movies. So, I got into writing and learnt Hindustani classical and was completely involved with it. I stumbled into acting and didn’t realise the seriousness of it, throughout my first film. Only when I saw myself on screen, I knew this is what I want to do and should do a better job at it.”

We prod her on if being a star kid, she misses out on all the fun her friends her age are having and she’s quick to state, “Being a star kid never affected me. My parents are not into giving advice, but my mum is extremely independent and clear about what kind of movies she will do and with dad, it’s this all-consuming passion for cinema. He’s like the Duracell bunny with all batteries fully charged all the time. About having fun, a lot of friends my age are married and it doesn’t seem like fun. Infact, it seems like its more work than being an actress.” What’s her ideal man like, we question and she says, “There’s no ideal man, but if I were to look for some qualities in my man, it will be intelligence, loyalty and good humour.”

With a spate of Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films lined up for the near future, Shruti couldn’t have asked for a more promising time ahead. The black-eyed beauty reveals, “My role in the Telugu film Puli is one of my most feminine girlie characters so far. It’s a fantasy film, where I play the hero Vijay’s love interest. I’ve always admired Sridevi and her career is a great source of inspiration. To see her at work, my respect for her has grown immensely. The other films I’m working on are Vadi Vasal, Vedhalam and Singam 3 in Tamil, Size Zero and another one in Telugu and Rocky Handsome and Kismat Konnection 2 in Hindi, besides  many song recordings.”

Looking casual in denims and a tee for a store launch, Shruti admits she always dresses according to her mood and says, “Some days I like casual and others I like to glam it up, but you’ll never catch me in yellow. I can go from hippie chic, to just a jeans and tee and then there are days when I don’t bother at all.”
